Several Midwestern states, including Wisconsin, were the hardest hit in the country by a record number of U.S. personal bankruptcy filings last year.
The number of filings nationally rose 32 percent last year to more than 2 million, according to statistics compiled by Lundquist Consulting, an analytical firm based in Burlingame, Calif., and Middlesex, N.Y.
Filings were up 40 percent in Wisconsin to 38,615 and up 40.4 percent in Dane County to 2,252, according to records at the Wisconsin Western and Eastern districts of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court.
