As expected, next-generation DVD products due out later this year sprouted like bluebell flowers on the Texas roadside at this week's CES in Vegas. However, the most interesting aspect was how each of two competing standards fared. The stakes are big--multibillions of dollars--as the Sony-backed Blu-ray proponents duke it out with the Toshiba-led HD DVD crowd.

The struggle is for a market that replaces the DVD and videocassette industry. Despite repeated attempts at compromise, the two sides have embarked on a standards war. It's reminiscent of the format battle between VCRs and Sony's Betamax in the 1980s.
