On Jan. 4, the opinion offered here was that the Gophers' backcourt of Vincent Grier, Maurice Hargrow, Adam Boone and Rico Tucker made this a likely NCAA team with a chance to reach the Sweet Sixteen. There had been several stupid opinions attached to my name in a quarter-century of writing sports columns for Twin Cities newspapers, but this was the topper.
On Friday, Sid Hartman wrote of the Gophers' 0-4 start in the Big Ten: "With any luck, this team could be 3-1 in conference play." If you studied Sid's archives for the past six decades, you might not find a more pained effort to offer benediction to a coach.
