Energy bills shock West Dennis, Mass., homeowners.

Jan. 24--WEST DENNIS -- There must be a logical explanation.

Pat and Steven Mechlinski just don't know what it is yet.

Since buying their two bedroom "summer shack" last May, the most electricity the Mechlinskis had ever used in a one-month span was 194 kilowatt hours.

That billing cycle covered the end of August, when the Cape ranch was abuzz with the comings and goings of the North Attleboro couple and their three children.

In November, the family dutifully shut down the cottage, clearing the water pipes, unplugging appliances and sprinkling moth balls to prevent an off-season must.

Needless to say, when a $241.83 electric bill ...
