Article: NIH final FY2006 appropriations approved.(government aid to National Institutes of Health)

On December 21, Congress passed the final National Institutes of Health (NIH) appropriations for fiscal year 2006. On December 22, Congress then passed the Department of Defense (DOD) appropriations, adding a 1% across-the-board cut to nearly all federal discretionary spending.

According to the Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), total R&D for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) decreased 0.2% to $29.0 billion for fiscal year 2006, leaving the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) among a short list of HHS institutions to benefit from R&D increases at 9.3% and 9.6%, respectively.
