Jan. 24--They've been delivering water to farmers for decades, but never have they delved into the business of drinking water -- until now, that is.
The Elephant Butte Irrigation District is looking into building a treatment plant that would take water from the Rio Grande, clean it and offer it for sale to municipalities or rural water associations in Dona Ana County.
Supplying drinking water would be a first for an irrigation district in the state. Some water policy experts say it could help rural areas afford treatment plants, while allowing farmers to keep their water rights in the face of increasing pressure to sell ...
