Jan. 26--Air Products and Chemicals started its fiscal year on a strong note, saying Wednesday its first-quarter profit rose 8 percent over last year.

The Trexlertown company said net income for the three months ended Dec. 31 reached $181 million, up from $166.8 million in the same period last year. Air Products' fiscal year ends Sept. 30, which makes the last three months of each year the first quarter.

First-quarter earnings per share of 80 cents beat analysts' estimates by 2 cents.

Air Products employs about 4,200 people in Lehigh and Northampton counties, making it the region's third-largest employer. It is ...
