BC NOTEBOOK; Eagles have bad memory; Bus accident mars team's first trip to UNC.(Sports)

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Boston College men's basketball team probably won't forget its first visit to the venerated Dean Smith Center for a particularly troubling reason.

The team's charter bus struck and killed a male bicyclist on its way to a late practice Tuesday night.

Though the driver and BC trainer Steve Basiel rushed off the bus to aid 39-year-old Harry Weldon Alston of Carrboro, N.C., while a member of the coaching staff called for help, the bicyclist was later pronounced dead.

Police spokeswoman Jane Cousins said the accident involving the bus owned by Southern Coach Co. of Durham occurred about 6:30 p.m. on N.C. Highway 54.
