DATES SET FOR VOTE. Haiti's interim government has yielded to international pressure and advanced the date set for national elections, setting Feb. 7 for an initial electoral round, with follow-up voting in March, reports AFP (Jan. 9, 2006):
The election schedule comes on the heels of urging by the United Nations Security Council and the Organization of American States that the provisional government hold quick elections. Originally slated for Jan. 8, the election was postponed a week earlier for the fourth time since November when government officials said preparations were far from complete;
