INCREASED SPERM mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) copy number and poor mtDNA integrity are associated with low sperm motility, according to a study. The finding could lead to new ways to treat male infertility.
"Mitochondrial DNA copy number or integrity might be a good diagnostic tool in that it could explain male infertility, such as abnormal sperm function," said lead investigator Gyunjee Song, PhD, a research fellow at the University of Rochester in New York. "It is easy to measure and could be an important diagnostic tool, although much work needs to be done."
