The Detroit auto show has been around since 1907, but it took on its "North American International'' status in 1989. Since then automakers have used the Detroit show to reveal hundreds of concept cars.
Concept car designers have free reign: Even when they're previewing an upcoming production model, they need not adhere to constraints of regulation or manufacturing process.
