Across the U.S., control state liquor commissions and state legislatures are moving to come into compliance with last year's Supreme Court ruling on the direct shipment of wine to consumers. Generally speaking, the decision posits a level playingfield; that is, if states allow in-state wineries to ship directly to consumers then they must also allow out-of-state wineries to similarly ship directly to consumers. Or, the states can ban both forms of direct shipment. Within these parameters, there is some room to maneuver, as pending legislation in Michigan shows.
