The first Black woman lawyer to head the Legal Defense Fund remains the favorite to become the next assistant attorney general for civil rights in Washington. But Elaine Jones, a longtime civil rights specialist and a graduate of the University of Virginia law school, has told friends that she's not interested.

At a recent reception for new Solicitor General Drew Days in the nation's capital, Sen. Orrin Hatch said Ms. Jones would be ideal for the post. "So you can chew me up," retorted affably the NYC-based lawyer and personal friend of Yale law school graduates President Clinton and the first lady, over a long period. She has made no comments on any job offer.
