MUCH OF THE KNOWLEDGE used to succeed in school, work, and life is acquired implicitly without the intention to learn or even the awareness that we have learned something. Polanyi (1962, 1966) coined the phrase tacit knowledge to describe this type of learning. In discussing knowledge that is difficult to put into words, he stated that "... we know more than we can tell" (1966, p. 4) and that "the aim of a skillful performance is achieved by the observance of a set of rules which are not known as such to the person following them" (1962, p. 49). Tacit knowledge is often referred to as "know-how" or "street smarts" and is usually defined by comparing it to explicit knowledge. ...
