THERE ARE THREE CENTRAL "SUPERTRAITS" essential in understanding individual differences in personality, according to Eysenck (1990). These personality traits are extraversion (vs. introversion), neuroticism, and psychoticism. Extraverted individuals naturally have a lower arousal level than do introverts, which causes extraverted individuals to seek stimulation to raise their arousal level. In contrast, the naturally high arousal level of introverted individuals causes them to avoid stimulation as much as possible. This is why introverts tend to like quiet activities whereas extraverts tend to like stimulating activities (Eysenck, 1990).
