In Zimbabwe's Zambezi Valley, 2005 was the driest year in the last twenty. May looked like August, with most of the water holes long since dried up. The buffalo and antelope were concentrated around a few fast-drying mud holes, and the hippo had mostly retreated to the Zambezi. Still, there were a few water holes hidden in the bush. We found one of them, and in it we found a hippo bull sleeping peacefully, its back not quite submerged in the shallow water.
