GERMAN Rail (DB) is in discussions with Hamburg's local government about acquiring a stake in port operating company Hamburg Harbour and Logistics (HHLA) and Hamburger Hochbahn (HHA), which operates the U-Bahn, bus, and ferry services. But if a deal is struck, Hamburg wants DB to move its headquarters to the city.
DB's aspirations have met considerable opposition, particularly in Berlin, where it currently has its headquarters. The federal transport minister, Mr Wolfgang Tiefensee, approves the acquisition of holdings in HHLA and HHA, but is opposed to the company's relocation.
