APPARENTLY, many schools no longer include dates in the study of history.

That is unfortunate, because dates are important - some more so than others.

But what is the most important date in British history? Most people would probably trot out the usual suspects: Hastings, 1066; Union of the Crowns, 1603; Waterloo, 1815. Some might plump for the end of World War II in 1945 or even 1973, when the UK joined the Common Market.

How many, I wonder, would answer 1688? Precious few, I imagine. ...
