American Indians have high rates of alcohol abuse and posttraumatic stress disorder, and substantial psychiatric comorbidity is prevalent in this population as well, reported Janette Beals, Ph.D., and her associates at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Aurora.
Using a random, stratified sampling procedure, the investigators studied 1,446 members of a Southwest tribe and 1,638 members of two closely related Northern Plains tribes. The tribe members studied were 15-54 years of age (Arch. Gen. Psychiatry 2005;62:99-108).
