NASHVILLE, TENN. -- Many inactive, overweight adults with arthritis are not getting medical advice to lose weight and exercise, Jennifer Hootman, Ph.D., wrote in a poster presentation at the annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine.

"We know that both weight loss and exercise have disease-specific benefits for this population, including decreased pain and improved function and mental health," Dr. Hootman, an epidemiologist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told this newspaper. "We want to start working with providers to help them understand what they can do to get these people to lose weight and get active."
