The rice-wheat production system in the Asian subtropics occupies nearly 12 million ha (29.6 million ac) in South Asia. These two staples are commonly grown in rotation, with rice in the monsoon months and wheat in the cooler winter months. In the Punjab (Pakistan), the climate and irrigation provide sufficient water to grow rice in the Kharif (summer) and wheat during the Rabi (winter) months. The rice-wheat zone is located in the canal irrigated area (Figure 1) where the climate is sub-tropical with annual rainfall of 400 to 700 mm (16 to 28 in).
