Q. I have 20-year-old azaleas that stand 5 feet tall. They have a fungus of some sort. Leaves are beginning to fall off. Several leaves are enclosed. These plants are fertilized twice a year and kept free of mites. Please let me know what ailment they have. - Jean Roberts, Virginia Beach.
A. Bonnie Appleton closely examined your leaves at the Hampton Roads Research Center. She reports there is excrement from azalea lace bugs on them but she finds no symptom of other problems. Azalea lace bugs can discolor plants. Virginia Tech's recommendation is to spray the plants in late May or early June and repeat at three- week intervals. Products recommended include Bayer ...
