COLD calls are one of the curses of the modern age. But now householders are being encouraged to play call-centre sales staff at their own game.

Instead of letting double glazing or credit card salespeople do all the talking - usually reading from a set script - a "counterscript" turns the tables by making them answer some questions.

It has become an internet phenomenon, with thousands of people copying it from a website to use when dreaded cold callers come on the line.

It works by offering a set of questions to ask the salespeople to put them off their pitch.
