PITTSBURGH--Audio and video entertainment software is not unlike produce in a supermarket. The constant need to keep fresh products on the shelf while removing outdated items requires almost constant attention from store personnel.
That, says Harry Steck, president and chief executive officer of entertainment rack jobber Rank Retail Services America, is a major reason why many drug chains have been reluctant to tackle the category.
An added deterrent is the common misconception that retailers need to devote a significant amount of space to such products if they are to keep up with the steady stream of popular videocassettes, compact discs and audiotapes.
