The province of Nova Scotia has long been renowned for its geologic resources. Some of the earliest mines in North America operated here, producing coal, gypsum, and barite. The first gold rush in Canada took place in Nova Scotia in the 1860s, thirty years before the Klondike. For collectors, Nova Scotia became revered in the 1800s as a source for world-class zeolites. Excellent examples are still being found, due in no small part to erosion created by the Atlantic Ocean, which nearly surrounds the province, and particularly in the Bay of Fundy, which produces the highest tides in the world.
