GLASGOW, SCOTLAND -- The importance of diagnostic biopsy for solitary lesions was underscored by three cases presented in a poster session by Daniel Glass, M.B., at the annual meeting of the British Association of Dermatologists.
In case 1, a 77-year-old woman presented with an erythematous plaque on her right shin; this initially was thought to be squamous cell carcinoma in situ, or Bowen's disease. Biopsy was performed and histologic evaluation revealed a junctional melanocytic lesion with severe architectural and cytologic atypia. There was upward spread of melanocytes, and irregular junctional nests were present. A diagnosis of melanoma in situ was made.
