Economic growth, which includes more energy demand, does not have to come at the expense of the environment, according to President Bush's environmental advisor.

Society has assumed pollution is a trade-off for growth and technological advances, said James Connaughton, chairman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, who spoke at the 9th Annual Electric Utilities Environmental Conference held Jan 22-25 in Tucson.

"It's exactly the opposite,'' Connaughton said. "Sustained economic growth is a solution to our environmental challenges, it is not the problem.''
