Article: What's in a name? ---- Rapids residents and others respond; Star Tribune North asked readers whether they would rename Coon Rapids, and if so, what they would call it. Here are some of the responses.(NORTH)

This morning I began reading the Star Tribune as usual. When I got to the section Star Tribune North, the article regarding the renaming the city of Coon Rapids got my attention. I grew up in what I can remember being called Anoka Township. In October 1952, this area was incorporated into the Village of Coon Rapids. The city got its name because of the rapids at the Coon Rapids Dam on the Mississippi and also by the raccoons that ran wild. I am sure that our founding fathers gave no thought of any racial meanings when they named the city Coon Rapids.

I thought about my father also this a.m. His name was Herb Gunther. He and several other civic-minded individuals ...
