They lost championship while winning wallets of enthusiastic hockey fans
To paraphrase the old Saturday Night Live character: "Hockey has been very good for Los Angeles."
Well, at least it's been kind of good.
Even though the sport is more known for its on-ice fights than economic impact, the Los Angeles Kings' seven-weeks-long playoff run was a boost to many local businesses, especially if they had anything at all to do with the hockey team.
Talk to any of the thousands of rabid Kings fans around the Southland and they'll likely tell you they spent an extra $300 since the team ended the regular season and started the playoffs in late April. ...
