WITH all the furore going on at present over Mozart's 250th anniversary, it is perhaps a suitable time to remember a man who played a considerable part in three of his greatest achievements. Lorenzo da Ponte wrote the texts for his three greatest operas, Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni and Cosi Fan Tutte. Giovanni was an original, while the others were reductions of dramatic pieces, which da Ponte skilfully adapted to the form required of opera, at the same time avoiding censorship problems. He also provided the text of Davidde Penetenti to be heard at the Liverpool Phil on Saturday next week.
