EVER wondered where the expression "Sent to Coventry" comes from?

Most people think they know the answer and that it refers to Civil War prisoners held in Bablake Church who were scorned by local folk when they were exercised in the streets. Bablake itself is often referred to as the place where the expression was born.

There is, however, much more to it. The first person to suggest a connection between Royalist prisoners and the expression was William Hutton who wrote a history of Birmingham at the end of the 18th century.
