Feb. 3--Although Ryan Sontag has shown great prowess on the baseball field for Arizona State, it was his prose in cyberspace that was the biggest factor in his coming to Tempe. Last summer, Sontag -- fresh off being named Big Ten freshman of the year at Michigan State -- became disgruntled with the Spartans when they fired longtime coach Ted Mahan. After deciding to transfer, the speedy outfielder sent an e-mail to prospective programs. When Sontag's message appeared in the inbox of ASU coach Pat Murphy, he opened it and was impressed.
