The thousands of tourists from the United States and other countries who will make the almost ritual visit to Ireland's national theater, the Abbey, this summer will be unaware of the latest turmoil behind the scenes. The surprise announcement that the young, talented artistic director, Ms. Garry Hynes, has decided not to seek a renewal of her three-year contract at the end of the year has sparked yet another "Abbey crisis." She will have been the sixth artistic director in seven years which have seen a series of rows between the directors and the board, which is appointed by the government.
