California’s total cheese production set an all-time high for the state in 2005, surpassing 2 billion pounds.
The state saw a 7.1% increase in total cheese production in 2005 compared to the previous year, according to the California Department of Food and Agriculture. The total amount produced reached 2.14 billion pounds of cheese.
California remains the second-largest U.S. cheese producer.
Although its 2005 numbers aren’t in yet, Wisconsin is likely to retain the No. 1 spot, says Bob Cropp with the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
