Mystery still surrounds the source and possible motives behind a series of explosions that Sunday hit Russia's Mozdok-Tbilisi trunk gas pipeline in the generally Moscow-friendly republic of North Ossetiya near the Georgian border. The explosion disabled both the main and reserve Gazprom pipelines to Georgia and neighboring Armenia.
In marked contrast to the situation that led to an acknowledged cutoff by Russia in supplies to Ukraine earlier this month, gas relations between Moscow and Georgia had appeared to be on a relatively even keel prior to this incident (WGI Jan. 11,p1).
