Mail order pharmacy has grown 30-fold over the past 10 years. Capitalizing on the potential while side-stepping the pitfalls will challenge pharmaceutical marketers.
The corner drugstore -- already squeezed by chain and discount outlets -- may be further transformed by a new-fangled pharmacy in which customers never set foot. In less than ten years, mail order pharmacy has come of age. Medco Containment Services, one of the largest firms, had net sales of $1.8 billion in 1992 -- a whopping 55 percent growth over 1991.
