AT THE CIRCUMCISION OF JUDAH
"She [Leah] conceived again and gave birth to a son; ... she named
him Judah." (Genesis 29:35)
At the circumcision of her fourth son,
Leah couldn't stop crying;
Jacob alone had to welcome the many guests
Who crowded into the tent.
Isaiah was the sandak
And Maimonides the mohel,
Whose hands remained steady
Even as Leah cried.
Rabbi Akiva sat at the main table with Rashi,
Learning together a difficult passage in the Talmud,
While Freud and Einstein argued in German,
With Heine eavesdropping.
As King David played his harp, eyes closed,
