Introduction
Gossiping is one of the most pervasive activities within organizations yet rarely does it receive serious attention by organization theorists. We read literature replete with examples of gossip (Meyer Spacks 1985); there are newspaper 'gossip columns'; we watch television chat shows; and we readily gossip with friends and relatives during our leisure time. At work, however, it seems that gossip is 'merely' part of the informal communication network, and has no special significance. Out of forty-two 'general' organizational behaviour textbooks in our library, only one has a brief mention of 'gossip'. We would argue that this grossly under-represents ...
