The return of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) last October after a twenty-five-year absence marked a turning point in America's approach to mental illness. The placement of research on mental illness and behavior in the mainstream of biomedical science signals overdue acknowledgment that mental illnesses are as scientifically and clinically valid as other medical conditions under the NIH aegis.
