With its dominance in Southeastern District gymnastics hanging precariously in the balance beam, Hickory High shored up its footing in the event and won its ninth title in 10 tries last Wednesday night at Western Branch High.
Coach Sean Raymer watched as two of his first four girls fell from the apparatus near the end of a close team match. Things were getting a bit tense.
Just two events remained and Hickory needed good scores to hold off Western Branch, which had finished its events.
But Marissa Self picked up a 9.7 and Megan Clapp a 9.525 to finish first and second ...
