Horace, the master mason, was on the staging some 18 feet up on a new fieldstone chimney: "No! Go left, now straight ahead, yes, that one!" I picked up the selected fieldstone from the pile, put it on my shoulder and carried it up the ladder. There had to be a better way to handle materials.
Having done a bit of sailing, I rigged up a bowsprit on the staging, attached a block and tackle, designed a sling to carry the stones and mortar up to Horace, and made material handling a lot more efficient for both of us. Horace could never understand why I wanted to leave the trade and go off to college.
