A publican plans to turn the former Scottish military HQ of the puritanical leader - who flogged his soldiers for being drunk - into a beer garden.
The remains of the Leith Citadel, where hundreds of members of Cromwell's New Model Army were billeted in the 17th century, stand beside Mariners pub in Leith's Commercial Street.
The site is unmarked and has become largely forgotten despite the efforts of historians to win it more recognition.
