Feb. 12--The evolution of a newspaper staple - the obituaries - continues into cyberspace. There is, perhaps, nothing as intensely personal as the death of a family member, be it a parent, spouse, sibling or child. Obituaries are extremely important to the families of the deceased and remain one of the most widely read segments of newspapers nationwide. A bit of history is important to understand the need for recent changes in the way obituaries are handled. As Stockton and the surrounding area grew, it became harder for The Record to continue publishing obituaries free of charge. The cost of newsprint was a factor.
