"The Pink Panther" is no jewel, but it's a fun movie. While it's a remake that didn't cry out to be made, it isn't a travesty like so many others of its ilk, and it doesn't insult its source.
Granted, fans of the original "Pink Panther" films are unlikely to acclaim Steve Martin as the new Peter Sellers, and with good reason. Martin's portrayal of clueless Inspector Clouseau is too self-conscious to match the oblivious genius of Sellers' version. He just doesn't bumble with the same panache.
Sellers' Clouseau solved crimes in spite of himself. Martin simply isn't enough of an idiot.
