Q: I've heard that the prespawn is prime time for lunker largemouths, but I don't seem to catch many big ones then. What am I doing wrong?
A: You may be fishing at the wrong depth. This is crucial to catching big prespawn bass, and it changes from lake to lake. In stained or muddy water, large fish are apt to be shallow, holding tight to cover. So toss a spinnerbait right up against wood and rocks. In clearer water, they'll probably be relating to structure in the 8- to 10- foot range. Try a jerkbait over dropoffs and points.
