'AR 839' soft red winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) (Reg. no. CV-972, PI 634012) was developed by the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station. It was released in October 2002 for its resistance to stripe rust (caused by Puccinia striiformis Westend.) and consistently high grain yield under Arkansas conditions.
AR 839 was derived from a [F.sub.2] population received from Dr. Stephen Harrison, Louisiana State University, in a germplasm exchange in 1991. The cross of 'Terral 101'/'Pioneer brand 2548' (PI 532913) was made in 1990. Terral 101 has the pedigree Coker 71-21/'Blueboy II'//Coker 65-20*5/'Wichita' 7*'Transfer'.
