ROME -- While his artisans painstakingly whittle and file minute pieces of gold in their Rome workshop, Francesco Trappani sits in his office a few blocks away and plots how Bulgari is going to conquer the world.
"Bulgari is on the attack," said Trappani, the dynamic, 36-year-old managing director of the family-run jewelry firm that is now taking on the likes of Tiffany & Co. and Cartier.
Trappani is a nephew of brothers Paolo Bulgari, chairman of the company, and Nicola Bulgari, vice chairman, and is overseeing its transformation from an exclusive Italian jeweler with a high-brow reputation into a prestigious luxury goods firm known worldwide.
