Washington, D.C. -- Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff accepted responsibility Wednesday for his agency's much-criticized response to Hurricane Katrina last year in an appearance before the Senate Homeland Security Committee.
Republicans and Democrats grilled him over why accurate information was hours or even days late to reach him and President Bush. That included reports of the breaking of levees in New Orleans and the inability of then-Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) director Michael Brown to manage the crisis.
