It was no great surprise when Toni Morrison won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1988 _ many saw it as payback time since her novel ``Beloved'' had been rejected the previous fall for both the National Book Award and National Book Critics Circle prize.
But Thursday's Nobel Prize was a bolt out of the blue.
Citing her ``epic power, unerring ear for dialogue and richly expressive depictions of black America,'' the Swedish Academy named the 62-year-old Morrison as the 11th American _ and first African American _ to win the world's most prestigious literary award.
