After his victory at Chancellorsville, Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee felt that by taking his campaign to the North in the summer of 1863 he could replenish his depleted supplies and destroy the Army of the Potomac. Such a triumph, he reasoned, would force President Abraham Lincoln to sue for peace terms and persuade the European powers to recognize the Confederacy. Lee sent Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart's cavalry ahead to monitor the movements of the enemy, but the flamboyant commander ignored his orders.
